Zakat Al Fitr

Zakat el fitr, a simple gesture against hunger

7 € per person

According to Abdullah Ibn Omar (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet ﷺ imposed the charity of breaking the fast (Reported by Bukhari). This purifies our fasting and is meant for the needy. Thousands of them die of hunger every year, especially in the most remote areas of Africa. Zakat is an opportunity for you to feed them, on the occasion of Ramadan 2022.

Yalasheep takes care of distributing your Zakat al fitr in one click. It’s simple and supportive!

SUMMARY

Give Zakat al Fitr in Africa

Yalasheep is an association that has been working for more than five years in the poorest villages of Africa. We have recently focused our actions in Madagascar, where the population is dying of hunger. The villagers’ harvests were destroyed by the cyclones at the beginning of the year, the situation there is critical. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to distribute thousands of meals, food packages and school kits for orphans.

How to calculate Zakat Al-Fitr ?

For the calculation of zakat, the head of the family must take out for each member of his family under his responsibility the equivalent of ½ Saa’ of wheat, or 1 Saa’ of dates, or 1 Saa’ of barley or other foods that people in the country eat, such as rice, semolina, couscous etc. In practice, one Saa’ is a measure equivalent to about 3 kg.

When to give Zakat al Fitr?

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported the following:

“For the one who gives Zakat before the (Eid) prayer, it is accepted, and for the one who gives it after the prayer, it is only a charity among others. (Reported by Abu Dawud).

Thus, it is customary to give one’s Zakat el Fitr before the Eid prayer.

What is the amount of Zakat this year?

According to Abu Said Al Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): “We used to take out the charity for breaking of the fast one sa’ of food, or one sa’ of barley or one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of cheese or one sa’ of raisins. (Reported by Bukhari).

When we convert this unit of measure into actual monetary value, it is equal to about 7€.

Who should give Zakat Al-fitr?

Every head of a family who can afford it has to give his Zakat el fitr. He should give it for each member of his family for whom he is responsible.

Is Zakat Al-Fitr mandatory?

It is an obligation for every Muslim who can afford it:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made it obligatory to give a saa’ of dates or a saa’ of barley as charity for breaking of the fast for every slave or free person, male or female, small and large among the Muslims.

Then he ordered it to be handed over before the people went to the (Eid) prayer.

Reported by Al Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi

How do I pay Zakat Al-Fitr?

You can either buy the equivalent of the amount of zakat in food and distribute it yourself, or you can ask an association to distribute it for you. The main thing is to give food to someone in need.

Can I give Zakat Al-Fitr in cash?

The majority of scholars and jurists have not allowed zakat el fitr to be taken out in pecuniary form, i.e. as a gift of money (currency).

“During the time of the Prophet ﷺ we used to take out Zakat El Fitr of 1 saa’ of food, or 1 saa’ of barley, or 1 saa’ of dates, or 1 saa’ of dried milk, or 1 saa’ of raisins”

Reported by Al Bukhari

Who is entitled to Zakat?

Zakat al fitr is a charity to be given to the poor, the needy, relatives in need etc. Yalasheep makes sure that your Zakat al fitr is distributed to those who really need it.

The needy person is the person who has just enough to feed his family without any surplus left, or who has less than that.

And Allah knows best.

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ imposed the charity of breaking the fast because it purifies the fasting person from futile and indecent talk, as well as it is food for the poor.

Whoever gives it before the prayer, it will be an accepted Zakat, and whoever gives it after the prayer, it will be only a charity among the alms.

Reported by Ibn Maja and Abu Daoud

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ imposed the Alms of breaking the fast because it purifies the fasting person from futile and indecent words, just as it is food for the poor. Whoever performs it before the prayer, it will be an accepted Zakat, as for whoever gives it after the prayer, it will only be an alms among alms”
